Criminal Defence Lawyer
Brampton, ON
I am committed to defending my clients in the best way possible. During my 28+ years throughout the GTA and primarily at the Brampton Courthouse, first, as a student and then as a lawyer, I have earned many beneficial and respectful contacts with Judges, Crown Attorneys, and Police Officers in Peel.
The Foundation: Elite Legal Training
Early Recognition at the University of Toronto
I started my journey at the University of Toronto, studying Political Science and International Relations, with a minor in Criminology. While still an undergrad, the university hired me as a teaching assistant for an International Law course. Usually, those roles are reserved exclusively for Master’s or PhD students, so it was a huge honour to be chosen so early in my academic career.
Mastering Criminal Law at Queen’s University
From there, I attended Queen’s University Law School, focusing my studies entirely on criminal law. I had the privilege of learning from world-class professors and top practitioners, including Professor Don Stuart. While at Queen’s, I founded the Queen’s Criminal Law Association in 1994. I am incredibly proud that this organization is still running today, more than 30 years later.
Blazing a Trail in Peel Region
Choosing Brampton Over Bay Street
After graduating and completing my articles, I chose not to head to the big corporate firms in downtown Toronto. Instead, I saw a profound need for high-tier criminal defence closer to home. I established my roots at the Brampton courthouse, becoming the first lawyer of South Asian origin in the Peel Region to practice criminal law exclusively.
Overcoming the Odds: In the beginning, the landscape lacked diversity, and breaking into the field was tough. But my focus remained entirely on blazing a trail and securing results for my clients. Over the decades, I earned the deep respect of judges, police, and court staff through rigorous work and unwavering professional integrity.
High-Profile Cases & Media Commentary
Defending High-Stakes Trials and Over 30 Homicides
Throughout my career, I’ve handled over 30 homicide cases and numerous high-profile trials. Just six months after being called to the bar, I successfully defended a complex case involving a bank teller’s murder in Brampton. Later, I defended an individual accused of links to the 9/11 hijackers. In 2006, I was thrust into the international media spotlight again during the high-stakes “Toronto 18” terrorism trial.
A Trusted Legal Voice on CNN and Larry King Live
Because of the magnitude of these cases, major news networks frequently ask me to share my legal insights. I’ve appeared on Larry King Live and CNN, and have been interviewed by prominent Canadian journalists like Dwight Drummond.
To ensure the public understood their constitutional rights, I also wrote a weekly legal column for a local newspaper for several years, translating complex court procedures into plain English.
Commitment to the Community & the Next Generation
Mentoring Future Advocates
I am deeply committed to supporting the next generation of trial lawyers. I regularly volunteer my time helping with the competitive moot court program at the Brampton courthouse, training young advocates on how to command a courtroom.
Giving Back to Peel Region and Queen’s Law
True advocacy extends beyond the courtroom. Whether it’s volunteering for children with disabilities, sponsoring local youth sports teams, or donating to critical charities, I believe in actively building up our community.
I also continue to support Queen’s University today. It provided the world-class legal foundation I needed to become the defender I am, and I bring those exact tools to the fight for my clients every single day.

What You Receive When We Work Together
- I am a lawyer that strives on getting results for clients, not increasing the volume or paying commissions to other lawyers who are doing cases on my behalf;
- I also can assure you I will not be meeting you in a coffee shop or an open area to discuss your sensitive, confidential case like other lawyers may do. This is your life, after all, that is on the line and meeting outside of a law office, such as the courthouse or in a coffee shop, is both unprofessional and breaches your confidentiality;
- I also can assure you that as an experienced lawyer, you will be treated fairly. I do not speak poorly of other lawyers; I do not talk behind their backs. Other lawyers who choose to do that are doing so because of their own insecurity or inability that you will not hear from my office;
- I represent clients to the fullest of my ability: I deal with my clients, interact with their families, their friends and loved ones in order to properly deal with their case;
- I am always available via email or my cell phone and I will go the extra mile to ensure that you received the results you desire;
- We’re also not lawyers who tell you that “we only do trials and we never will negotiate or plead your case”, that is just impossible;
- Some cases must be negotiated for the best result: I will not string a client along to do unwarranted motions, court appearances or wasting time and your money.
- I will directly be dealing with your case, not a junior lawyer. If you call or are referred to me, you will get me, GARY BATASAR, not another lawyer dealing with your case;
That is the type of quality service all clients deserve when dealing with the court process. This is the service you will receive after hiring me, GARY BATASAR, among the best lawyers in Brampton!
